Modem FAQs
Q. How do I de-install the modem ?
A. In the Control Panel, Modems, your modem will be listed, Select it and click on Remove.
Q. How do I set the modem for Speakerphone ?
A. The speakerphone mode supported by this modem requires the use of Microsoft Netmeeting (included in Windows operating systems) or similar software. With a mic and speakers (or a headset) connected to your PC’s sound card, it allows you to hold conversations over the internet with similarly equipped PC users around the world, for the cost of a local call.
Q. Windows didn’t detect my modem , can I install it manually ?
A. In theory you can, but if Windows does not automatically detect the modem then it will not be capable of using it to communicate. If this happens the problem is usually due to a bad or incorrect connection between PC and modem.
Q. Is this a software or Win-modem ?
A. No, this external modem is a truly ‘hardware’ modem which has no reliance on the host PC’s facilities.
Q. When I put in the CD, it prompts me to install voice software ?
A. You can press the Exit button to close this software option until ready. Note that this software is optional and does not load any modem drivers.
Q, What is AMBIENT and what’s it got to do with INTEL ?
A. AMBIENT Technology was the name of the company which developed the main controller integrated circuit (chip) inside the modem. In 2001, the Ambient company was taken over by INTEL, so the older drivers refer to an Ambient chip, but later versions (such as after you upgrade to V.92) refer to the modem as Intel-chipset-based.
Q. How and when do I upgrade to V.92 ?
A . There is no benefit in upgrading to V.92 until your ISP does so. (As this is written in December 2001, no UK ISP is supporting V.92). When your ISP does change, you can download the V.92 flash utility (at the foot of this page) to upgrade your modem. A facility to ‘downgrade’ the modem back to V.90 is also included in the downloaded files.
Q. Do I need to have a PC in order to use this modem ?
A. No, this modem can be used
